Actor Scott Adkins joined the cast of HOLBY CITY last month as Assistant General Manager Bradley Hume. Kindly he took time out of his hectic schedule to talk to holby.tv about his new role…
Are you enjoying your time on HOLBY CITY so far?
Yes, it’s been a great experience. The whole cast are a joy to work with and they are all very welcoming and committed to the show.
How did you celebrate after learning you had got the role?
Me and my girlfriend were actually going to the Brits after party and that was the day I got the news so we went for a nice meal and then enjoyed some drinks at the party. It was a good night.
What was your first day on Set like – were you nervous at all?
I’m always nervous when I start a new job, it’s like being the new boy at school but everyone was very welcoming so it wasn’t a problem. I normally say that anything you do on the first day you might as well start again and throw it in the bin but ofcourse on a TV show you can’t do that. Luckily, I only had one line on my first day anyway, so they were breaking me in easily!
What can you tell us about your character Bradley? Are you anything like him?
He’s similar to me because I always like to find myself in the character as opposed to trying to create the part from scratch but I actually based the part on my brother because he works in the medical profession himself as a drugs rep. Brad is very confident and self assured and he can relate to anyone in the hospital on their level whether it be a consultant or porter. He needs to be a people person because part of his job as Assistant General Manager is to get everyone on his side so he can achieve his goals more easily. Ofcourse, the medical staff don’t normally like administration because they are always cutting costs but he’s just trying to meet his quotas and do his job well.
Did you used to watch HOLBY CITY before you joined the show?
I didn’t but I’ve always watched CASUALTY from an early age because it’s my Mom’s favourite show. I started to watch it after I got the role so I could see what style of show it was.
You have a background in martial arts and have appeared in a number of films in that genre. Did you enjoy filming these and working with such leading directors?
It was a dream come true for me to work with people like Jackie Chan and Jet Li, these guys were my idols as a kid. I’ve been training in Martial Arts from an early age so I knew I was ready to go toe to tow with them, but it’s still a very nerve wracking experience when you are trading kicks and punches with the worlds most recognised martial arts stars. It’s been very rewarding to be able to see how the best action designers in the world create such incredible fight scenes and to be a part of that but I also feel very happy to be able to work on British TV shows and learn the other side of the craft, the acting side. This is where my true passion lies.
Which actors/ actresses do you admire?
I’m a big fan of Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman and Denzel Washington. Washington and Hopkins are always so in the moment and there is so much truth behind their performances but I admire Oldman for his over the top performances. Great fun.
Away from the busy filming schedules, what do you like doing in your spare time?
Obviously I train in martial arts a lot. I also teach Kickboxing. It’s more of a lifestyle than a hobby. I also spend an abnormal amount of time watching movies. There’s nothing better than being able to forget about your own worries and spend a couple of hours wrapped up in someone else’s world.
Would you be a good person to have round in an emergency?
Well I do have my first aid certificate so I guess I could help a little but I’m not sure I’d like to find myself in that position. I don’t mind the sight of blood though.
