Established actor Robert Powell joined the cast of HOLBY CITY in February of this year as Mark Williams, the ex-husband of Tricia and the supposed father of nurse Chrissie – until it was discovered that his dad, Frank, was in fact her real father after raping Tricia. A secret which only Tricia holds following the death of Frank, but her hostility towards him led an unknown Mark to halt plans of a new relationship between them. Fans still hope the pair will get back together but we talk to Robert about his role and how he perceives their relationship…
As an already established actor, what made joining HOLBY CITY appeal to you?
I’ve never done a drama series of this kind before. It’s great fun being allowed to develop a character over years rather than weeks.
How would you describe your character Mark?
He’s a man to whom everything seems like a good idea at the time! Tends to avoid confrontation but this is probably because he is beset by women!
What do you think about Mark’s relationship with Chrissie and also his ex-wife Tricia? Do you think he will ever get a close relationship with Chrissie or reignite his relationship with Tricia?
I think he loves them both dearly. He gets closer to Chrissie all the time. I’ve no idea where his relationship with his ex-wife will end up though!
Do you get on well with other cast members? Do you socialise outside of work hours?
The cast are the nicest bunch of actors you could hope to meet. Yes we do meet up occasionally for a night out!
Did you have to do much research for your HOLBY CITY role?
I shadowed a nurse on a night shift at Charing Cross. It was a revelation!
Could you be a real-life nurse?
No!
Did you used to watch the show before you joined HOLBY CITY?
I didn’t but I hardly watch any drama on TV these days. There isn’t enough time.
You’ve worked extensively on both TV and film – what do you prefer doing?
I think I prefer TV. It moves quicker, less time to get bored with a scene.
Who or what inspired you to become an actor?
I don’t know. I just found that I was never happier than when I was on stage.
What have been some of the highlights of your career so far?
Too long a career and too many jobs to remember, but I suppose Doomwatch, the film Mahler, obviously Jesus of Nazereth, 39 Steps, The Detectives and HOLBY CITY!
