S1 E2 (19 Jan 99) : Happy Families by Joe Turner
Episode Summary
Nick climbs out of bed with Ellie and kisses her goodbye. He goes to Kirstie’s room but she doesn’t want to let him in. She describes Nick as “one of Meyer’s golden boys” and she seems jealous. She looks like she’s about to let him in, but closes the door in his face.
Jasmine and Julie aren’t getting on very well as although Julie is pleased that her best friend got the job, she feels that she deserved it and she’s upset about doing night shifts because she’s never there for her daughter. She’s also anxious that her daughter always seems to be ill. Meyer tells Nick that he’s not committed and a lot more interested in money, cars, and women.
Muriel McKendrick is talking about her plans for a drugs scheme and says she needs assistance. Kirstie volunteers and after rescheduling the meeting, Muriel tells Kirstie that it’s a good idea. Kirstie and Nick are flirting in the canteen and Chloe interrupts, realising that they were obviously talking in a romantic manner. Kirstie tells Chloe that there is no her and Nick.
There’s a new doctor on the ward, Victoria Merrick, who is awkward with her patients and worries a female patient by not fully explaining the disease. The patient refuses to be treated by Victoria and Victoria asks Julie to help her. The patient then gives Victoria a lecture on handling people.
The Ward Clerk Paul keeps going to talk to Nicola, who is still in a coma. He takes her a personal stereo to listen to, and kisses her on the forehead just as her father comes in. He starts a fight with Paul and the nurses come to try and help. Nicola’s father thinks that Paul is abusing Nicola and Paul tells Ray that he thinks he’ll resign as he assumes that they’ll sack him anyway. He believes that Nicola knew when he was there and says that if she asks for him, Ray must tell her the truth.
The new ward sister, Karen, criticises Nick for his treatment of two siblings who did not know their father had cancer. When Nick later sees Karen alone, she says that if she knew he worked here then she wouldn’t have taken the job. He says it’s her fault and they start arguing again. Jasmine overhears and later asks Karen if Nick and her have a history and Karen tells her not to ask.
