Episode Summary

A heart has become available, both Ed’s father, George, and another patient, Ron Collins await to see who will become the successful receiver of the transplant. George’s blood results are not what they should be and show signs of liver problems, but Tom sneakily suggests that Ed lies about the results of his blood test. His father then secures himself the operation, however just as Zubin is about to start, he discovers the differing results and brings in Ron to face the operation instead and Zubin and Tom agree that George’s chances are not too good – he is only going to make it a couple of weeks with his heart and it is very unlikely that another heart transplant will become available during that time. Ed is angry and upset, however both Tom and Zubin feel he has become too involved in his father’s case and refer his father to liver function tests to find out what is wrong. George, however, is not feeling too positive about his chances and tell Ed that he wants to go home to die. Ron survives the heart operation, and his friend, Angie, stays with him but is unsure of their relationship. Later, when Ron is listening to football he suggests she should go to the canteen to buy something and she takes her chance to leave, following Tricia’s advice to put herself first.

Mubbs is annoyed when he hears Rosie’s girls talking about moving back in with Sami. Rosie admits she told them that just in case things didn’t work out but Mubbs assures her he’s in it for the long haul and that he will do his best, even though he can never be their father.

Carol Hughes, 34 weeks pregnant, arrives with preclamsia. She is struggling to keep the relationship with her husband alive and their teenage daughter Megan suggests that her mother got pregnant just to keep the marriage alive. In hospital she fits, and the team are forced to perfom a C-section on her. The baby boy is born dead. The couple decide to break up, agreeing that the baby would have been the only thing keeping them together, upsetting their daughter by doing so.

Robert Pullman is brought into EDU after a car accident. When he arrives he is unconscious and suffering from hypothermia, because the car went into a lake while he was trying to avoid crashing with another car. His girlfriend, Liz, dies in the accident, and her mother – who didn’t know of their relationship – arrives demanding to know what happened and why he was with her daughter when the accident took place. Once Robert wakes up he is upset to find out about Liz being dead, who he recently had found out was pregnant, drying and also ends up in an argument with the mother. He also needs surgery because of his liver being injured in the crash, but fortunately the operation goes well. Jess feels sorry for him and tries her best to talk to him and cheer him up.

After shift, Diane meets up with Peter for another drink. They end up talking about past relationships and Peter says he has never been in a serious relationship and Diane reluctantly claims that she has not been in one either. She also says that she needs to know where she stands, but when she asks him he backs off, leaving her confused.

Ed: Not very good.

Zubin: Ed, I don’t want you to take this the wrong way, but it would have been reckless for me to continue. It could have killed him, is that what you want?

Ed: I want him to get what he’s entitled to.

Zubin: I know what you’re going through, but just be careful.

Ed: No one deserves a heart more than him.

Zubin: I’m telling you, don’t get involved.

Ed: Oh what have I….

Zubin: I’m warning you, Mr Keating. I’m watching you.
