Episode Summary
Jac is not pleased to see new consultant Nick and it’s obvious the pair have a history.
Nick is treating a cancer patient of Ric’s (Frances) whilst he is out at the University. Nick recommends a different treatment than the one Ric had prescribed – the operation is controversial and could lead to her death. Jac challenges Nick, saying he is doing the operation simply to prove a point. She realises he has not checked with Ric, so Nick calls him and hands her the phone but Jac doesn’t want to say anything. Frances tells Nick she cannot have the operation today as she needs to see her solicitor first to sort out the custody of her daughter if she dies in the operation. Nick interferes and speaks to her American ex, telling him to lie to her that he will not take her daughter to the States if she dies. Her worries about her daughter put at ease, Frances agrees to the operation today. Ric has been trying to call Nick and worries when he repeatedly cannot reach him. He rushes back to the hospital and walks in on Jac and Nick in the operating theatre. The operation is a success but Ric is furious with Nick, who is unrepentant.
Lawyer Abi comes onto the ward with her overbearing PA Monica. She is expecting a transplant operation, however learns the heart has been reallocated when the flight carrying the heart was grounded. Connie wants to try a new prototype ‘plastic heart’ procedure – Abi would be the first recipient in the country. It’s a risky operation and [ID 1570]Elliot[/ID] is concerned Connie is doing it for personal gain and to impress Lord Byrne. Despite the operation’s initial success, they discover she has a fatal aneurism which the pulp is not to blame for. Connie looks gutted.
Elsewhere, [ID 1535]Matt[/ID] is dealing with a difficult patient, Robyn. The teenager tests his patience to the limits and he tries to plam her off onto Dean so he can sit in on Connie’s operation. However when he realises she has a form of epilepsy, he returns to treat her. He finally manages to win her round, which impresses Lola.
